But the real miracle of 'Sunset Song' is that Davies, who has suffered so much - and found so little value in his suffering - has made a movie that vividly captures the bittersweet beauty of life on earth. Gibbon's story has been swelling within him since he was first enraptured by the BBC miniseries adapted from it in 1971, and at least 16 years have passed since he began actively trying to make his version (a span during which the project was killed and resurrected enough times to earn the holy hush that it inspires from those who worship at the altar of this determinedly irreligious auteur). Never has that been more true than it is of 'Sunset Song,' which is faithful enough to Lewis Grassic Gibbon's 1932 novel of the same name that the author is granted a possessive credit in the film's opening title card. He's now 70 years old, and each of his successfully completed films arrives like a merciful act of the God to whom Davies no longer speaks. Davies' style has alienated him to most financiers, his shame has alienated him from many queer critics and his nature has denied him the reverent mystique that clings to other auteurs who make films at the same rate - Davies has been butchered for many of the same qualities that make Terrence Malick a holy cow. Not even Terry Gilliam has had such a tough time of shepherding projects to the screen. Deyn may be well suited to the director’s painterly compositions, but her unprecedented moment of “big” acting at the end is cringe-inducing on several levels.Every new Terence Davies film feels like a miracle, in no small part because most of them are. Capping a sometimes excruciatingly slow 135 minutes, that last bit stands out for abruptly jumping in time and place.Īmid the often impenetrable Scots dialect (subtitles, please), the famously tuneful director allows glimmers of real emotion to surface only when people start singing, while the remaining drama falls flat. The pristine locations alternate between Scotland and New Zealand, with one sequence shot in Luxembourg. But Davies gives little more weight to the sweep of history than he does to changing patterns of sunny wheat fields or winter storms, as phenomenally captured on 65mm film by widescreen cinematographer Michael McDonough. This rare positive connection is inevitably interrupted by the larger horror of World War I. (Like many here, he was featured in the Proclaimers-based musical Sunshine on Leith.)

Her prospects both deepen and narrow when she meets kindhearted farmer Ewan Tavendale, played by coincidentally named Kevin Guthrie. But her reality is circumscribed by a brutish father (Peter Mullan, of course) who regularly beats her brother (Jack Greenlees) and keeps their mother (Daniela Nardini) perpetually with child. She dreams of college and the wider world at the start of the 20th century. Played by startlingly elongated model turned actor Agyness Deyn, crimson-haired Guthrie is a bookish high-schooler in rural northeastern Scotland. classics The House of Mirth and The Long Day Closes takes those words too seriously.
